How does stress affect your skin, and what can you do about it?

It’s Stress Awareness Month which means it’s the perfect opportunity to take a deep dive into how stress can impact not only our mood, but also our skin.

You may have noticed in the past that your body may react in a number of ways when you’ve experienced stress, especially prolonged periods of stress. That can range from feeling irritable, struggling to sleep, constantly feeling fatigued and under pressure, getting sick more easily, and even growing a sudden batch of grey hairs!

It’s not just you, it happens to lots of us. And stress impacts our skin, too.

Why? How? And what can you do about it? Keep reading to find out.

The science

When you experience stress, your body releases a cocktail of hormones to prepare us for fight or flight. Two of the most notable hormones are adrenaline and cortisol, both of which affect different functions such as the flow of blood to your skin.

When we’re in this stressed state, our body is busy keeping us prepped for an upcoming struggle, rather than maintaining our skin, hair and other regular functions. And this can cause a number of negative impacts.

The negative effects

Some of the most common direct impacts of stress on our skin include:

  1. Dry skin

  2. Delayed wound healing

  3. Premature ageing

  4. Dark circles and puffiness

  5. A dull complexion

  6. Hives and rashes

  7. Redness including rosacea

  8. Skin infections

  9. More oily skin

  10. Spots and increased acne

Not all of the impacts of stress on our skin are directly correlated. When we’re stressed, we tend to act differently too. Smoking or drinking more, worse sleep, and reaching for comfort food all negatively impact our skin too.

The holistic solution

The most important way to combat skin complaints as a result of stress is to tackle the stress itself. Prolonged stress can lead to feelings of self doubt, anxiety and depression. We all experience stress at times in our lives, and that’s normal. But longer-term exposure can lead to chronic health conditions, beyond skin complaints.

At Buff, we know the impacts that stress and depression can cause, especially for men who may struggle to seek help or lack the natural support networks to discuss their feelings. It’s why we’ve partnered with the charity Mind and support their fundraising efforts through donating a portion of our profits to them each year. And yes, of course, we have some products that would definitely help 😉

A bad spot can ruin your day. Our Acne Spot Cream is fantastic at calming irritated skin and is infused with potent anti-bacterial ingredients such as Salicylic Acid and Tea Tree Oil. We’ve already sold out once and have limited stock.

And help stop spots forming in the first place by regularly washing away dirt and bacteria from your skin, especially after waking up, after a workout, and before bed.

Tackle dry skin with our Daily Moisturiser and All-In-One Oil

Dry skin is one of the most annoying symptoms of stressed skin. It can lead to flakiness and a sandpaper feeling, made worse if you’re constantly working out and washing your face.

Our Daily Moisturiser is recommended by GQ and is lightweight and non-greasy. They loved it. And our All-In-One Oil is a really powerful multi-purpose product. “So silky”. “My skin has never felt so soft”.

Reduce dark circles and puffiness with our Calming Eye Cream

It’s often said that we wear our stress, we can look like we’re carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. And a lot of that stressed-out look is through our eyes, especially when they develop dark circles and puffiness.

Our calming eye cream with cannabidoil is reshresing and calming, and delivers a brighter and more even complexion.

Rejuvenate a dull complexion with Vitamin C

It’s hard to explain what a dull complexion really looks like, but you will have noticed it yourself sometimes when looking in the mirror and you’ll be able to see that your skin just looks ‘flat’. It lacks radiance and energy.

Our Vitamin C Serum with antioxidants and hyaluronic acid is fantastic for brightening skin tone and protecting against environmental stressors. It smells incredible, too.

Slow down premature ageing and speed up wound healing with our LED mask

Two of the biggest skincare issues associated with prolonged exposure to stress are premature ageing and even slow wound healing.

Big skin issues require a big skintech solution, and our LED mask is just that. Recommended by T3 and as featured on the BBC and in Men’s Health magazine, our LED mask uses light therapy to fight blemishes, promote collagen production, and reduce inflammation.

One reviewer said that after just six uses, they noticed a real difference. After 12 wears, they saw wrinkles start to reduce. Don’t believe us? Read about it here
